Forklift Training FAQs

A forklift training course is a requirement for people who wish to attain a forklift operator's licence in Australia. Most people who plan to take this course often have a lot of queries regarding the application process and what to expect during training. Below is a piece with some forklift training course FAQs.

Who Qualifies For Forklift Training?

Anyone above 18 years of age qualifies for forklift training. You will also need a unique student identifier and prove competence in the English language. The reason behind this is that the forklift course is in English. In some states, applicants require a driving licence. You also undergo a medical assessment to ensure you do not have any illnesses that could cause accidents as you operate the equipment. For instance, partial blindness could affect your visibility in lowly-lit conditions. On the other hand, an epileptic attack could affect your judgement or ability to operate the forklift.

Where Do You Learn To Operate A Forklift?

In Australia, applicants register for forklift training in a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). If possible, consider strategically located RTOs with competent and highly experienced instructors. Forklift training takes several days, depending on your competence and comprehension of the course material. When choosing an RTO, inquire about the flexibility of training hours. For instance, you might prefer afternoon or weekend classes if you are formally employed.

What Categories Of Forklift Training Exist?

There are two forklift licences; LO (order picking) and LF (forklift truck). The order picking licence only allows you to operate an order picking forklift. This is a unique forklift where the operator works at heights. It is often used in warehouses to store and retrieve inventory at heights. The LF licence allows the applicant to operate all other types of forklifts.

What Should You Expect During Training?

Most applicants exhibit some nervousness as they apply for the course. The easiest way to get rid of this nervousness is to acquaint yourself with the elements of forklift operation. For instance, you could read about the various types of forklifts, their uses, and their operating principles. This way, you have an easy time in class. During training, your instructor divides the course into practical and theory sessions. The theory lessons acquaint you with the forklift safety procedures, inspection protocols, and how to deal with operating challenges.

During practical lessons, you sit on the forklift and operate it under the guidance of your instructor. Ideally, you are required to replicate what you learned during the theory sessions. If your instructor deems you competent, you undertake an assessment and apply for an operating licence if you pass.
